Earth has warmed by about 1 degree Fahrenheit over the past 100 years. But why? And how? Well, scientists are not exactly sure. The Earth could be getting warmer on its own, but many of the world's leading climate scientists think that things people do are helping to make the Earth warmer.
The best information we can obtain is that the gases which man is producing when burning mined fuels from the ground, especially the gas given off called carbon dioxide, is causing what is known as the greenhouse effect. The theory is that the gases which scientists call greenhouse gases make the Earth warmer by trapping energy in the atmosphere.
While that may be hard to believe in the middle of a cold winter, if it is true it could mean big changes for our planet, and possibly for you in your lifetime.
In the greenhouse effect, light from the sun warms land, water, and air. In turn, the warmed-up land, water, and air give off heat, which rises up into the sky. These gases in the Earth's atmosphere capture some of that heat and prevent it from escaping into space as quickly as it used to. This means that the warmth tends to make the earth a little bit warmer than it used to and as more of these human produced gases go inot the air, the warming increases.
There is no problem with the gases themselves. Carbon dioxide is a very common gas and even our bodies make it quite naturally. Every time we breathe out, we send carbon dioxide gas into the atmosphere. However, that carbon dioxide is one example of a greenhouse gas and in other words, it is a gas that traps heat.
Over the last 100 years, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has been steadily increasing. Most of this increase has been due to human activities, as we said earlier, such as burning of oil and coal, or clearing of forests.
Global Warming is really a big problem we have to deal with nowadays, because it has the potential to change forever our lives and our planet's environment as we know them, and this would affect the whole mankind. There are huge changes this would bring to our people, our governments, and many of us would become poorer. But, don't be concerned as these are problems that will only take place if the theory is correct, and if we don't do something to stop the rise of temperature getting faster as time goes on.
There is a debate about who are to blame for this dangerous thing: what are the causes of global warming? Is it the way we use so much fuel from the ground in our factories, homes and cars? Could these be other reasons for the temperature rise, maybe made by animals or producted in another natural way, anyway?
Those are some very interesting facts on global warming for kids which we should all be aware of.
The debate which all those interested in global warming for kids will agree is important is the climate change debate. Also, often called the global warming debate, it is one that has been ongoing for about 10 years now. However, it has only really been over the past couple of years when scientists and other researchers have started to realize just how serious an issue the facts on global warming, for kids who will expect to be be around for 80 or so years, really are. The main pobnt to remember is that as the concentration of greenhouse gases grows, more heat is trapped in the atmosphere and results in making the situation worse as time goes on.
While talking about global warming for kids though it is important to put the current situation in perspective. The earth has lived through global warming and then afterwards - cooling - many times before.
Yes! The Earth has cycled through many repeated periods of warming and cooling over the billions of years of its history due to the greenhouse effect. There are many natural factors that contribute to the greenhouse effect, and these occur very slowly over many millennia.
But, the fact that worries scientists is that the temperature now is thought to be increasing faster than ever, and on a global scale that cannot be explained by these natural processes. Most scientists now appear to be saying that it is now clear that humans are responsible, but this is only a theory and could be incorrect. It could be just coincidence that temperature rises are closely the same as predictions from computers.
Natural causes are causes created by nature. One natural cause is a release of methane gas from arctic tundra and wetlands. Another can be the effect of the dust and chemicals thrown out by a large volcanic eruption and putting this dust and chemicals in the air.
Scientists have spent decades studying what is causing global warming. They've looked at the natural cycles and events that are known to influence climate. But the amount and pattern of warming that's been measured can't be explained by these factors alone. The only way to explain the pattern is to include the effect of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted by humans.
To bring all this information together, the United Nations formed a group of scientists called the International Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC. The IPCC meets every few years to review the latest scientific findings and write a report summarizing all that is known about global warming. Each report represents a consensus, or agreement, among hundreds of leading scientists.
Do you want to know more about what global warming is and how it is affecting the world around us? If so there is no better time than the present to start learning about this ever so important global issue.
