Renewable Energy

Renewable energy sources (Renewables) waiting to be tapped are many and varied and include:-

  • The sun, wind and tide
  • Biofuels
  • Energy Recovery from Waste, and Combined Heat & Power
  • Geothermal sources
  • Heat pumped energy from natural thermal storage.

At present renewable energy is either seen as either an expensive solution to climate change that scars the landscape (wind turbines), or as an essential feature in the quest for a low carbon economy. But in reality, the essential ingredient missing until now has been intensive investment spending in the sort of intensive research needed to develop the necessary technologies.

Bush may have it right if he energetically promotes Renewables ahead of Kyoto and Carbon Trading. The sooner governments and large corporations begin the necessary big investment push into Renewables Technologies, the better for the globe, and in particular for the wealth of the nations who develop truly sustainable economic Renewables technologies first.

Prospects for Renewables make good business, and environmental sense, particularly long term. What makes us excited about Renewables - and also pushes their prospects ahead of nuclear - is both their potential low cost and in most cases inherent small scale nature.

Renewables seem to offer an ability to deliver power from small scale units and the potential energy sources are vast, usually free, and available close to where the energy is needed, reducing distribution costs and empowering local communities to make their own energy decisions.

Our first feature on renewable energy businesses studies the UK Landfill Gas EfW businesses here. We will be reporting on many other Renewables businesses in due course, which will mean technologies which are:-

  • safer
  • cleaner
  • greener
  • and much more deliverable locally and in times of most demand.
